New Zealand is exporting some magnificent plate alloy fishing boat, examples like Extreme, Stabicraft, Surtees, White Pointer and Profile boats are some of the big names and another quality brand such as this McLay Boats also comes from the “Eastern state”.

We have just landed this well presented, one owner since new McLay 551 Sportsman plate alloy cuddy cabin fishing boat. What an ideal boat for fishing the estuaries, bays and offshore as it’s built like a brick outhouse and packed with the inclusions an angler would want.

First Impressions

As the pictures indicate the hull appears unpainted, however it is painted with a coating called Nyalic, a clear coating to protect the aluminium from discoloration. No probs with pulling the pots alongside or the beak strike of a Black, or your lazy mate who slams the side of the hull with a sinker!

If you are looking for a robust, near unbreakable fishing boat for yourself or a mate to tag along (not the one who bangs the boat with a sinker) then this pocket rocket punches above its weight for its size. Check out the construction, fully welded everywhere! The cockpit is huge for a boat of this size and with loads of storage, a live bait tank, walk through transom and awesome cutting board!

On the Water

Overhead a quality bimini offers reprieve from the midday sun and we like how it's been finished off with the front and side clears for added protection from the weather. Above this is a rod storage rack fitted holding your best 6 rods! If you don’t have 6 – an excuse to buy more maybe??

Power, did we hear you ask for power? This rig is maxed out with the EFI 115Hp four stroke Mercury bolted to its bum providing more than enough power to push you and your mates quickly and efficiently. The outboard was serviced in January 2019 and has recorded a low 200 hours use. To top this off, the motor has been both pretested mechanically and, on the computer, further backed with a limited BIA engine warranty.

For the Skipper

The dash is clean and well set up with engine instrumentation providing the engines stats and atop of the dash a large screen Lowrance Elite 7 colour screen combo GPS/Sounder is fitted.
